Frequently asked questions

How many pixels is 1 rem?

It equals the root font size, which is 16 px in most browsers by default. Change the root font size field if your site uses another value.

What is the difference between em and rem?

rem is relative to the root (html) font size; em is relative to the font size of the parent element, so it can compound when nested.

Why does CSS say 1 inch is 96 pixels?

CSS defines a reference pixel so that 1in = 96px on screen regardless of the actual display. For print, use the printer's DPI instead.
