Financial Calculator (TVM)

A time-value-of-money calculator that works like the TVM keys on a business calculator. Choose the value to solve for, enter the other four and set payments per year and payment timing. The interest rate is solved numerically, so you can find the rate on a loan or investment as well as payments, terms and balances.

How to use the Financial Calculator (TVM)

  1. Choose which value to solve for: N, I/Y, PV, PMT or FV.
  2. Enter the other four values using the sign convention: money paid out is negative, money received positive.
  3. Set payments per year (12 for monthly) and END or BEGIN timing.
  4. Press Calculate, or load an example to see how the inputs work.

Frequently asked questions

Why do some values have to be negative?

TVM uses cash-flow signs: money leaving you is negative and money coming in is positive. A loan you receive is +PV with −PMT; a deposit you make is −PV with a +FV.

How is I/Y solved?

There is no closed-form formula for the rate, so it is found numerically — first with Newton–Raphson iteration, then with bracketing and bisection if that fails to converge.

How is compounding handled?

Compounding is assumed to match the payment frequency (P/Y = C/Y), and I/Y is the nominal annual rate. Results are estimates for planning and education, not financial advice.
