HTML Entity Decoder

Paste escaped HTML or text full of entities and get readable characters back. Named, decimal and hexadecimal references are all decoded, including the full HTML5 set of more than 2,000 names. Decoding uses the browser’s text parser in a way that never creates elements or runs scripts.

How to use the HTML Entity Decoder

  1. Paste text that contains HTML entities.
  2. Read the decoded text in the output box.
  3. Copy it or download it as a text file.

Frequently asked questions

Will decoded HTML tags be rendered or run?

No. The result is shown as plain text, so <script> or other tags in the decoded output are displayed, not executed.

What happens to unknown entities?

Unknown names such as &foo; are left unchanged, just as a browser would display them.

Why did &amp;lt; only decode once?

Each run decodes one level, so &amp;lt; becomes &lt;. Decode again if the text was escaped twice.
