Matrix Calculator

Edit up to two matrices of any size from 1×1 to 6×6 and apply addition, subtraction, multiplication, scalar multiplication, transpose, determinant, inverse, rank, reduced row echelon form or integer powers. All arithmetic is done with exact fractions, so an inverse shows 1/3 rather than 0.333333, and singular matrices are detected reliably. Switch to decimal view at any time.

How to use the Matrix Calculator

  1. Set the size of matrix A (and B for two-matrix operations).
  2. Type the entries as integers, decimals or fractions such as 3/4.
  3. Choose an operation and, if needed, a scalar or exponent.
  4. Press Calculate, then copy the result as tab-separated values.

Frequently asked questions

Why are results shown as fractions?

The calculator uses exact rational arithmetic. Fractions show the true value; turn off Show fractions to see decimals rounded to six places.

When does a matrix have no inverse?

A square matrix is invertible only when its determinant is not zero. If the determinant is zero the matrix is singular and the calculator says so.

Which sizes can be multiplied?

A × B needs the number of columns of A to equal the number of rows of B. The result has the rows of A and the columns of B.
