Frequently asked questions

Why do the formulas give different answers?

Each was derived from different data and assumptions. Devine and Hamwi were designed for medication dosing; Robinson and Miller were later re-fits of population data. Looking at the range is more useful than any single value.

How do the formulas work?

Each starts with a base weight at 5 ft (152.4 cm) and adds a fixed amount per inch above that, with different values for men and women. For example, Devine for men is 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 ft.

Do these formulas account for muscle or frame size?

No. They use only height and sex, so athletic or large-framed people may be healthy above these figures.

Should I use this as a weight goal?

Treat it as a rough estimate, not medical advice. A doctor or dietitian can help set a goal that suits your health, body composition and age.
