Character Counter
Type or paste text to get an instant breakdown of characters, letters, digits, spaces, punctuation and symbols, plus the size of the text in UTF-8 bytes. Progress bars show how much room is left for an X post, an SMS, a page title or a meta description, and you can set your own limit.

- Check the limit bars to see how many characters remain for each platform.

Frequently asked questions
Why does an emoji count as one character here but two elsewhere?
This counter counts characters the way people see them. Some systems count UTF-16 code units instead, where many emoji take two units; that figure is shown as "JavaScript length".
How are SMS segments calculated?
A single SMS holds 160 characters from the GSM-7 alphabet. If any character falls outside it (such as an emoji or Bangla letter), the message switches to Unicode and holds 70. Longer messages are split into parts of 153 or 67 characters.
Is the X / Twitter count exact?
It is a close guide. X counts every link as 23 characters and some characters, like Chinese or Japanese, as two, so the final count on X can differ slightly.
What counts as punctuation versus a symbol?
Punctuation includes marks such as . , ! ? and quotes. Symbols include currency signs, maths signs, © and emoji, following the Unicode categories.
