Hash Generator

Calculate cryptographic hashes of any text or file directly in your browser. SHA hashes use the built-in Web Crypto API and MD5 is computed in chunks so large downloads can be checked. Paste the checksum published by a download site to confirm your file is intact, in hex or Base64.

How to use the Hash Generator

  1. Choose Text or File and select the algorithms you need.
  2. Type text, or drop a file up to 200 MB.
  3. Pick hex, uppercase HEX or Base64 output.
  4. Paste an expected checksum to see whether it matches.
  5. Copy or download the list of hashes.

Frequently asked questions

Which algorithm should I use?

Use SHA-256 for new work. MD5 and SHA-1 are still fine for detecting accidental corruption but are broken for security purposes such as signatures.

Can I hash passwords for storage with this?

No. Plain SHA or MD5 hashes are too fast for password storage. Use a dedicated slow algorithm such as bcrypt, scrypt or Argon2 on your server.

Why does my hash differ from another tool’s?

Text is hashed as UTF-8 exactly as typed. Extra spaces, a trailing newline or a different encoding produce a completely different hash.

Is there a file size limit?

Files up to 200 MB are accepted. Very large files need enough free memory because SHA hashing reads the whole file at once.
