Paragraph Counter

Paste your text to count its paragraphs and see how much each one contains. A breakdown table lists every paragraph with its word, sentence and character counts so you can spot blocks that are too long. You can choose whether a blank line or every line break starts a new paragraph.

How to use the Paragraph Counter

  1. Paste or type your text.
  2. Choose whether paragraphs are separated by blank lines or single line breaks.
  3. Read the paragraph count and averages.
  4. Use the table to find paragraphs that are much longer than the rest.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a paragraph?

By default, text separated by one or more blank lines. If your text uses a single line break between paragraphs (common when copying from some apps), switch to "Every line break".

Are empty lines or lines with only symbols counted?

No. A paragraph must contain at least one letter or digit to be counted.

How long should a paragraph be?

There is no fixed rule. For web reading, two to four sentences per paragraph is common; academic writing often uses longer paragraphs.
