GST / VAT Calculator

Work out sales tax in either direction: add GST or VAT to a net price, or extract the tax from a tax-inclusive total. Pick a common rate or type your own, and switch on the CGST/SGST split for Indian intra-state invoices. The net, tax and gross figures are shown together so you can copy them straight into a quote or bill.

How to use the GST / VAT Calculator

  1. Choose "Add tax" if your amount excludes tax, or "Remove tax" if it already includes tax.
  2. Enter the amount and select the currency.
  3. Type the GST/VAT rate or tap a common rate such as 5%, 18% or 20%.
  4. Turn on "Split into CGST + SGST" if you need the two halves shown separately.
  5. Press Calculate and copy the breakdown.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove VAT from a price that already includes it?

Divide the gross amount by 1 plus the rate. For 20% VAT on £120 that is 120 ÷ 1.20 = £100 net, so the VAT is £20. Choosing "Remove tax" does this for you.

What are CGST and SGST?

In India, GST on a sale within one state is shared equally between the central government (CGST) and the state (SGST). An 18% rate is therefore shown as 9% CGST plus 9% SGST. Inter-state sales use IGST at the full rate instead.

Why does the tax not equal the rate times the gross amount?

Tax is always a percentage of the net (pre-tax) amount. When you start from a gross total, the tax share is rate ÷ (100 + rate) of that total, which is smaller than the rate itself.

Is this tax advice?

No. The results are arithmetic estimates. Rates, exemptions and rounding rules differ by country and product, so confirm with your tax authority or accountant before filing.
