Frequently asked questions

How is profit percentage calculated?

Profit % (as taught in most schools) is profit ÷ cost price × 100. For an item bought at 80 and sold at 100 that is 20 ÷ 80 = 25%.

What is the difference between markup and margin?

Markup compares profit with cost; margin compares profit with the selling price. The same 20 profit on a 100 sale is a 25% markup but a 20% margin.

How are extra costs handled?

Extra costs are added to the total cost of the batch, which raises the effective cost per unit and reduces profit.

Does this include overheads and tax?

Only the costs you enter are included. Rent, wages and income tax are not deducted unless you add them as extra costs, so treat the result as an estimate rather than accounting advice.
